Valeria Gaia was born in Treviso, Italy in 1960. She studied art history at the University of Padova, Italy. After having moved to Paris she had her first approach to photography as a photographer’s assistant before moving ahead to becoming a portrait and documentary photographer. Since the year 2000, prolonged travels to Oceania and North Africa inspired her to explore a more free and artistic approach to photography focusing on the observation of the visible reality and its essential elements: the mineral world, the fluid element, the plant life; from analogue she moved to digital photography whilst still continuing to work in daylight, capturing shapes, colours and light effects directly taken from nature. With “The Cities of Silence”, published in 2017, Valeria Gaia's photographs started to get involved in memory of the human cultural patrimony. |
